Athens Sandbox: Installation of GreeNest Standardised Packages

Our partners from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) have successfully installed four innovative systems at the Athens Sandbox demonstration. These systems represent key Standardised Packages developed within the project and include three variants of the EcoTechWall envelope system, the SmartWall modular façade system, and the NestControl digital monitoring and operational system. Together, they are now being tested in a real-world environment.

The installation includes the following Envelope systems, each showcasing a distinct approach to low-carbon construction:

  • EcoTechWall – light clay variant: produced on site using natural materials (clay and straw), demonstrating a locally adaptable, low-impact solution

  • EcoTechWall – bio-based insulation variants: combining recycled wood structures with wood fibre, cellulose, and coffee-based KARZ insulation, supporting circular material use

  • SmartWall: a prefabricated solution enabling rapid installation and integration of high-performance building components

In parallel, the NestControl system has been deployed to monitor the performance of all installed solutions. Through real-time data collection on thermal performance, energy use, indoor environmental quality, and durability, the Athens Sandbox enables comparative assessment and supports further optimisation of the Standardised Packages.

These results will be integrated into GreeNest’s digital tools, in particular the Bimetica platform, alongside replication guidelines and standardisation activities, enabling broader deployment of zero-emission building solutions. Read the full press release for detailed technical insights.
