GreeNest Partners Meet in Berlin for Technical Discussions

On February 23, the GreeNest partners gathered in Berlin for a technical meeting hosted by K-MÄLEON. Representatives from the National Technical University of Athens, Technical University of Berlin, ZRS Architekten, KETMarket, K-MÄLEON, and the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland came together to share updates and highlight progress on the project’s Standardized Packages and the demonstration sites.

Olaf Elze, Director of K-MÄLEON, showcased the company’s latest innovations. A standout moment was the live demonstration of KARZ, an innovative insulation material made from recycled coffee grounds. A second production of KARZ is planned in Greece in the autumn of 2026 to produce sufficient material for the wall systems at the GreeNestAthens Sandbox demonstration site.

During the Berlin session, partners experienced the entire KARZ production process, from preparing coffee waste and setting up the plant to controlled mixing and creating samples. They observed the production first-hand, examined final material samples, and discussed the performance characteristics of the new insulation material.

The partners also explored future opportunities to promote and expand the use of circular construction materials and solutions developed within the project. By connecting hands-on production with real-world demonstration and monitoring, the meeting underscored the importance of GreeNestStandardized Packages in advancing integrated, low-carbon, and zero-emission building solutions.
